NFL Notebook: Giants' Coughlin looks for injured Vick to play

The New York Giants' defensive game plan for the Philadelphia Eagles is going to have a major section on stopping Michael Vick.
As far as head coach Tom Coughlin was concerned Tuesday, Vick, the elusive Eagles quarterback, is going to play, concussion or not.
"I expect Michael Vick will play," Coughlin said on a conference call a day after the Giants (1-1) knocked off the St. Louis Rams 28-16.
Vick was knocked out of Sunday night's game against Atlanta with a third-quarter concussion, forcing Mike Kafka to finish. Philadelphia coach Andy Reid has not said whether Kafka or Vince Young

NFL Backs Lash Out At Fans!

mugshotsheader.jpg

Remember these following words; Sticks and stones may break your bones but words can never hurt you.
Now take those works you painstakingly memorized and text them to your nearest NFL running back because apparently these guys didn't get the memo.
Two of the NFL's brightest backs, the Tennessee Titans Chris Johnson and the Houston Texans Arian Foster, was guilty this week of being just a tad bit too sensitive. You see, they forgot the cardinal rule of being involved on some sort of social media, it goes both ways, so when each was faced with some negative backlash this

2011 NBA Playoffs: Heat Beat Sixers in Game 5, Win Series

0428-ron-artest-608.jpg

Continuing a season long tradition of slow starts and playing down to the opponent, the Miami Heat had their hands full holding off the Philadelphia Sixers 97-91 to wrap up the series in five games, their first series victory since winning the NBA Finals back in 2006.
Ultimately, the Heat won't be judged by how they performed in this first round but questions still remain over this squad and whether they can actually topple the Boston Celtics. This was not a feel-good close out game with lackluster play and vets Mike Bibby and Zydrunas Ilgauskas making coach Erik Spoelstra look

NFL Draft Rumors: Could the Atlanta Falcons Gamble on Torrey Smith?

torrey-smith_crop_340x234.jpg?1303692568

Most NFL mock drafts have had the Atlanta Falcons selecting a DE to help apply more pressure on the QB.  However, there could be a chance that the Falcons look elsewhere with their first pick.
It is possible that the Falcons could be looking to improve their receiving corps, as ESPN's Pat Yasinskas stated,
If the Falcons go with a receiver in the first round, I think it will be Maryland’s Torrey Smith or Pittsburgh’s Jonathan Baldwin. Both have good size and eventually could develop into upgrades over current starter Michael Jenkins.  Also, I’ve been hearing the names of Smith

NHL needs to better protect players

Right now, the world's best hockey players are battling for the Stanley Cup. Teams are staging dramatic comebacks, net-minders are making seemingly impossible saves and superstars are adding to their legends with highlight-reel goals.
But like a crude mustache scribbled on a portrait or a coffee stain on a crisp white dress, the issue of dirty hits smears the beauty of the NHL. The lasting impression of a player's performance should be his transcendent talent, not his ability to nullify the talents of others through violence. The games are best when two teams face each other at full-strength, but too

Just Sayin': NBA: Allow criticisms of officiating

nba_g_hawks_580.jpg

The first few days of the NBA playoffs have featured entertaining games with exhilarating finishes - every lower seed either scared or actually beat its higher seed.
These dramatic games are great for the league (ratings, ticket sales, growth, etc.), but one negative trend reared its head in several of the games: inconsistent, poor late-game officiating.
As a result, NBA players, coaches, staff and fans are left contemplating about correct calls that should have been and game outcomes that could have been.
Let's look at a few examples of the unfortunate refereeing:
In Game 1 between the Portland Trail Blazers

Variety: Turner drops out of NHL bidding war, leaving NBC vs. ESPN

BARKELYLYLY.jpg

It was a surprise when Turner Broadcasting was named as a suitor for the NHL, but a pleasant one. The production on their sports properties (NBA, MLB, NASCAR) is top notch. At the very least, they know how to put together a studio show, as the gold-standard group on TNT's NBA coverage proves every broadcast.
Still, it was hard to believe that Turner would hang in the bidding with NBCUniversal and ESPN because (a) its priorities are in scripted shows and in trying to land some NFL rights in 2013 and (b) the notion that the NHL would end up

Packers draftees say the darndest things

ap-nfl-super-bowl-football(7).jpg

In the first three rounds of the 1999 NFL draft, Green Bay took defensive backs Antuan Edwards, Fred Vinson and Mike McKenzie because general manager Ron Wolf wanted to stop receiver Randy Moss in Minnesota. The entire league was smitten with the big, fast, tall Moss and many teams also wanted to find his clone in the draft.
The skinny, speedy Donald Driver was not that guy.
Perhaps Driver sensed great skepticism on a conference call with reporters immediately after the Packers took him late in the seventh round that year.
So Driver promised he would bring his highlight film

Wake-Up Call: Opening night NHL playoff mysteries and marvels

nhl2k8-screen24.jpg  http://www.skysports.com/

While we ponder the enigma of Ryan Kesler blocking the Duncan Keith shot that led to Jannik Hansen's breakaway goal for the Vancouver Canucks in Game 1 - yet not even being on the ice, according to the game sheet - let's not forget about the other mysteries of opening night in the Stanley Cup playoffs.
Like, for instance: shouldn't they really just update the name on the Coach of the Year prize and call it the Barry Trotz Trophy? This man does more with less, on an annual basis, than anyone alive in the NHL.
